In which online degree programs do you teach?
What do you want your students to learn in your classes?
Students in my classes learn how the markets drive the economy and how approaching challenges with a deep understanding of what the markets value will lead to long term solutions. When we optimize our allocation of resources, the results can bring the greatest benefits to society. Topics we cover: portfolio management, asset allocation, factor pricing and global economics.
Why did you start teaching?
I wanted to make a personal impact, utilizing my skills and knowledge, in radically benefiting the life prospects of young people.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
Work hard, enjoy the challenge, only take what you actually earn and be kind. The ability to care must always come first!
What qualities make someone particularly successful in studying finance?
Finance is often seen as a very difficult subject. A student must have foundational knowledge in accounting, economics and statistics to begin a serious study of finance. Then, the ability to integrate knowledge is critical. Taking broad concepts to provide the direction to calculate a specific numerical result is very demanding.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in finance face today?
Ethics is what matters first. Fortunately, the professional organizations in the investments area of the finance profession, specifically the CFA Institute and the CFP Board, place professional ethics as the cornerstone of the profession. Then, technical skills are constantly being elevated in the top echelon of the financial world.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"The Plague" or "The Stranger" by Albert Camus.

In my twenties, I managed pizza delivery stores in Austin, Texas.
