What to Expect in an Online Bachelor of Sociology Program

Sociology degree programs prepare graduates for careers in almost any field. That is because sociology courses teach students how to communicate effectively with virtually any group. Solving problems, conducting research and analyzing groups of people are the basic elements of a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and graduates can apply this knowledge to almost any business environment. Mastery of the concepts covered in a sociology degree can lead to a successful career and, in some cases, influential leadership positions.

Sociology as Preparation for Success

Besides providing a launch pad for a rewarding career in almost any field, a sociology degree is one of the most fascinating areas of study. After all, sociology is the study of culture, personality and group structure. It is a field where students get to delve into the deeper aspects of how we live.

Many famous people have backgrounds in sociology:

  • Karl Marx: German philosopher and economist who published The Communist Manifesto.
  • Jan Addams: Pioneer American settlement social worker, and prominent reformer of the Progressive Era.
  • Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan: longtime U.S. senator and member of four consecutive presidential administrations.
  • Ronald Reagan: actor and politician who served as the 40th president of the United States.
  • Michelle Obama: lawyer, writer and former First Lady of the United States.
  • Rev. Jesse Jackson: civil rights activist, Baptist minister and politician.

Sociology Courses: What to Expect

Sociology courses range from Intro to Sociology, where students learn the basic concepts of how to study society, to more in-depth topics like family dysfunction or the sociology of illness. Below are a few other courses you can expect to take in a sociology degree program.

  • Statistics. This course is offered early on in the program, since it forms the basis for understanding research and analyzing data. Later in the program, it will also be necessary to conduct research, where the application of statistical methods is necessary.
  • Research seminar. This class offers students the opportunity to distinguish themselves by focusing on a specific area of study. According to the American Sociological Association, students who mastered research skills and continued to use them were more likely to get jobs in the sociology field.
  • Research Methods. Students must master basic research concepts before conducting their own research projects. The course provides an overview of social science research methods, measurement strategies and research designs.
  • Sociological Theory. The history of sociology and the evolution of theory over the decades is both fascinating and essential to developing a broad understanding of the field that will serve students in subsequent courses as well as in their future careers.
