Review UTPB's admission requirements for your online degree program.

Below are the university admission requirements. Each University of Texas Permian Basin Online degree program has specific requirements that you must meet in order to enroll. Please read the admission criteria for the program in which you are interested.

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
  2. Must have a 3.0 grade point average or better on a 4.0 grading system in the last 60 credit hours.
  3. A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination*, if the student has a GPA below 3.0.
  4. Acceptance by the Graduate Acceptance Committee of the College of Education in which the student expects to pursue graduate study.
  5. A minimum 1-2 page satisfactory essay submitted in APA format. Essay questions for the graduate programs are as follows:
    1. Bilingual/ESL: Why is the applicant interested in obtaining a master's degree in bilingual/ESL education?
    2. Educational Leadership: What do you see as the role of an educational leader?
    3. Special Education: Why do you want to pursue a degree in special education?

*An applicant's performance on a standardized test may not be used in the admission process for a graduate or professional program as the sole criterion for consideration of the applicant or as the primary criterion to end consideration of the applicant. No specific weight will be assigned to any one factor being considered in the admission process for a graduate or professional program.

Specific program requirements:

Educational Leadership

In addition to the Graduate School admissions standards, students must have at least one year of teaching experience. Students will be required to submit a Service Record within 8 weeks of Acceptance. Students who fail to do so may be subject to dismissal from the Educational Leadership program. Students seeking principal certification must have a teaching certificate and meet all other state specific requirements.

Special Education

Potential students must satisfy the requirements of the graduate school of admission.

Bilingual/ESL

Potential students must satisfy the requirements of the graduate school of admission and email two Letters of Recommendation to: gradstudies@utpb.edu.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution
  • 3.0 GPA or better in upper level (junior and senior level) work and in any graduate work already completed
  • GMAT scores at average percentile or better
  • Regular admission entrance score: ES = (GPA x 200) + GMAT: above 1120
  • GPA below 3.0 - 2.5 in the last 60 credit hours may qualify for conditional admission with other evidence by providing at least one of the following: two letters of recommendation, or professional experience and/or awards. Conditional admission entrance score: ES = (GPA x 200) + GMAT: at least 1000
  • A GMAT waiver is available for those with a 3.25 GPA in their undergraduate degree or 3.25 GPA in the last 60 hours of their undergraduate degree. All applicants qualifying for a waiver need to submit two letters of recommendation, at least one of them should be from an immediate supervisor or instructor.
  • Provisionally admitted students may take up to 6 credit hours of graduate coursework (non-elective courses) prior to submitting GMAT scores. The two courses need to be approved by the advisor. GMAT scores are required by the end of the term for full admission.

Criteria for Regular Admission

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 grading system in the last 60 credit hours.
  • The equivalent of three or more years of full-time professional experience in public, nonprofit, or for-profit organizations OR GRE Scores of 295 or above (verbal and quantitative combined).
  • Three letters of recommendation.

Criteria for Conditional Admission

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
  • GPA of 2.50 - 2.99 in the last 60 undergraduate credit hours.
  • GRE Scores of 287-294 (verbal and quantitative combined).
  • Three letters of recommendation.

International students may be required to submit TOEFL and GRE scores dependent upon UTPB's admission requirements for international students.

Must complete two (2) MPAL graduate courses with a grade of B or better to change conditional admission status to regular admission.

The final decision regarding admission will be made by the Master of Public Administration Leadership Coordinator.

Unconditional Admission Criteria

Transfer students seeking unconditional admission, who have accumulated 24 semester credit hours or more from regionally accredited colleges or universities, must meet the following entrance requirements:

  • Submit to the Office of Admissions official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. All documents submitted become the property of the University and will not be returned to the student.

    Students may request that the original institution send the transcripts electronically to admissions@utpb.edu. Transcripts sent electronically will only be reviewed if they are received directly from the original school.

  • Must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better on a 4.0 grading system in previous college work.
  • Must not be on academic or disciplinary suspension from any previously attended college or university (be eligible to re-enroll in the colleges or universities previously attended).

Conditional Admission Criteria

A small number of students who do not successfully meet these requirements or who enter with academic deficiencies may be admitted conditionally. Conditionally admitted students will complete a student success plan as one of the conditions for their admissions. To be removed from conditional status, a student must:

  • Complete twelve or more general education credit requirements from UT Permian Basin with grades of "C" or better in each course; and
  • Complete other enrollment requirements consistent with his or her deficiencies at the time of application.

Failure to meet these requirements may result in an academic probation or dismissal.

A transfer applicant from a non-accredited institution may be considered for conditional admission by the Admissions Review Committee. A transfer student admitted conditionally must achieve a grade point average of 2.0 or above for the first 30 hours of course work undertaken at U.T. Permian Basin and is subject to academic dismissal at any time the grade point average falls below 2.0.

Nursing Admission Requirements

  • Complete The University of Texas of the Permian Basin application and submit the $25 application fee and transcripts
  • Must hold a current RN license to practice professional nursing in Texas or other state recognized by the NCLEX-RN Council of Nursing
  • Must be graduate of a professional nursing program approved by the Texas State Board of Nursing, or appropriate State Board, and the professional nursing program must be nationally accredited
  • GPA requirement 2.75 Cumulative
